How school board elections work

  • School board elections are run by the Delaware Department of Elections, in May. Recent Capital elections were on May 10, 2022, May 9, 2023, May 14, 2024, May 13, 2025, and May 12, 2026. Source (opens another website)
  • All five Capital School District seats are at-large: every voter in the district can vote for each seat. Source (opens another website)
  • Members elected to full terms after December 31, 2021 serve four years (House Bill 92). Some seats are filled for the rest of an unexpired term. Source (opens another website)
  • When only one candidate files for a seat, the Department of Elections declares that candidate elected and holds no election for the seat (14 Del. C. § 1075(b)). Capital held no election in 2026 for this reason. Source (opens another website)
  • Candidates file by 4:30 p.m. on the first Friday in March of the election year. They must be U.S. citizens, live in the district, be 18 or older, not be paid employees of the district, and pass a criminal background check and a Child Protection Registry check. Source (opens another website)
  • The seat now held by Sean P.M. Christiansen ends June 30, 2027, so it is on the 2027 ballot. Source (PDF file)
